Strong-minded Silke says ‘no, thank you’ to Bachelor Marc!

Strong-minded Silke says ‘no, thank you’ to Bachelor Marc!

Even though she swept South Africa’s new Bachelor, Marc Buckner off his feet on the red carpet, prompting him to choose her as the recipient of the show’s coveted “First Impression Rose”, gorgeous Silke Geugis (24) from Cape Town decided not to continue their possible love journey.

In a shocking move, after Marc had called her name at the rose ceremony, Silke asked to have a word with him, and then broke the news.

Since Marc’s very first nod of approval in the first episode, viewers saw her increasing frustration at not finding her name on a one-on-one date card. So, the strong-willed lady made sure to get to know him a little bit better with a heart-to-heart conversation when she was chosen for a breakaway date  – and then again at this week’s cocktail party. She voiced to him that she is nervous about his view on religion and that it has been a deal breaker in previous relationships. Having to confront her doubt’s about whether he’d be the best life partner for her wasn’t easy though. She knew she was falling for Marc and the chemistry was there when they kissed, but their morals didn’t align and she didn’t want to stand in the way of another lady.

The confusion in her mind only cleared up  during the actual Rose Ceremony. She  explained to Marc: “I really appreciate the fact that you were so open with me tonight in our conversation. You know, coming into this journey, I did have my faith and it always was so important to me. And, throughout this journey, I have learnt that it’s an even bigger deal than what I originally thought. At this point I’m not really willing to budge on that fact for anyone,”. Marc was visibly taken aback, and asked if she’s willing to wait around.  She declined the offer.

The ladies were left broken and in tears – but – that didn’t stop Jess.R from handing Marc a love letter at the end of the Rose Ceremony. What does this letter contain and what is she hoping to achieve?

The first getaway one-on-one date!

Jess.R had patiently been waiting for her turn to go on her first romantic date with Marc, and boy was it worth the wait! Marc whisked her off to Chobe Water Villas, for a luxurious and romantic getaway in the beautiful Namibia. The couple spent time on the Chobe river, taking in breath-taking views and wildlife, as they got to know each other better. This was followed by a romantic dinner where he presented her with the very first gift of the season, a custom designed Jack Friedman Bracelet! To complete the perfect night, the couple kissed under the moonlight and Marc presented her with a rose. The following day, they spent the afternoon in their matching swimwear – designed by Jess herself – at the Chobe Water Villa pools.

The Talent Show

Whilst Jess.R was enjoying her time with Marc across the border, the rest of the ladies were busy preparing for an exciting talent show, where they would have to impress Marc their hidden talents! The twist however was that Jess.R was exempt from the show, and spent the afternoon in the audience, next to Marc – much to the dismay of the performing ladies. The show was definitely entertaining, barring some cringe-worthy moments.

From the all the amusing acts, it was Andeline’s painting skills that won her some much needed one-on-one time with Marc. The 24-year-old Afrikaans student was the only girl who hadn’t been invited on a date yet, and her big break had finally arrived – yay!

The first drama-free cocktail party

Post Nolo’s departure, the vibes at the house and the cocktail party were turned up a notch. But, as much as there were smiles all around, it was also awkward for the ladies. On this particular evening, Marc had decided to pull the ladies aside for chats, changing the status quo. This left some of the ladies frustrated, especially Pasha, who felt like she knew her worth and wasn’t about to be waiting around for a man.

A Rose Ceremony with a twist

After Silke’s dramatic departure, and the remaining roses being handed out, it was down to Parushka and Qiniso for the final rose. Parushka was convinced that she was going home, having spent the least amount of time with Marc. The last rose was handed to Qiniso, and Parushka found herself saying goodbye to Marc and the ladies.

Qiniso van Damme bags the first French kiss on The Bachelor SA!

The ladies vying for Bachelor Marc’s heart in M-Net’s spicy new season of The Bachelor SA are starting to show their true colours. And, after this week’s one-on-one date, some of them are seeing vivacious, bubbly model Qiniso van Damme as serious competition – and a little annoying. But who wouldn’t be jealous of the lady who receives the first passionate kiss from the man they are all dating?

Marc invited Qiniso on the firt out-of-town date and whisked her off to Ushaka Marine World, where they braved it out to experience shark cage diving – a first for both of them. Following their fun in the water, the couple headed to The Capital Pearls Hotel where they got to know each other better. But, it was during their walk on the pier that Marc presented Qiniso with a red rose, followed by some intimate lip locking.

The date was clearly a win in Marc’s eyes, who kept reaffirming that it was nothing short of perfect in his diary session. Marc admitted that he enjoyed how much they laughed together and that she felt like home. He even went as far as saying that he would like to meet her family. Does this mean that Qiniso has fast-forwarded her way to the finals? Only time will tell.

Drama at the Bachelor mansion

Not only did Qiniso’s date sent ripples of antagonism through the mansion; the drama in the purple room continued! A much needed mansion meeting was held, after the ladies couldn’t bear the brunt of Bridget and Greta’s feud any longer. The pair had to confront their issues and bury the hatchet, in aid of repairing the divide in the house. Bridget and Greta eventually hug it out. But, the meeting unearthed more drama with Nolo, who was left feeling victimised after being confronted for getting involved in Bridget’s and Greta’s drama. Did she really instigate the drama? Or was she trying to help?

The Group Date

In this week’s high-adrenaline group date, Rikki, Jess.C, Gilllian, Stefanie, Tamryn and Daniella had to compete to beat Marc’s time on a skid course, in a bid to win breakaway time with him. The six ladies had their driving skills put to the test in a stylish Toyota Supra, but it was Gillian’s time of 01:08 that won her the honours – of a trophy – and note the date unfortunately. Marc decided that he wanted to get to know Rikki a little better, inviting her for some extra alone time. The pair spent the rest of the afternoon, in the back of his cosy Toyota Hilux, with blankets and snacks. Even though the date wasn’t sealed with a kiss, there was a rose to sweeten the deal.

The Cocktail Party

Nolo fuelled the tension just as the cocktail party started by calling for a second meeting. She wanted to address her concerns and air her views on how she was portrayed for getting involved in the Bridget and Greta drama. The ladies did not appreciate her antics and felt that it was not the time nor place.

The Rose Ceremony

With two roses already handed out during the one-on-one dates, only fourteen roses were up for grabs at the Rose Ceremony. This week, Marc decided to send home 27-year-old nail artist Greta and 30-year-old soldier, Tamryn.

Greta’s parting words were, “I’m a little sad that Marc didn’t give me a rose, but at the same time, I’m happy that it was at this stage, and there was no heavy feelings involved,”. Tamryn said, “it takes two to tango, and I’m confident and okay with what I brought to the party thus far. I’m not going to say that letting me go was not the right decision, but he definitely missed out,”. Greta leaves behind an emotional Pi, who didn’t imagine life in the mansion without her while Tamryn was the rock in the house that they’re all going to miss.

The ladies are fast and furious on The Bachelor SA this week!

After two episodes of courting and cocktail parties, there are eighteen gorgeous ladies left in The Bachelor SA mansion, vying for the heart of this season’s big catch – successful business man and down-to-earth international model Marc Buckner. This week, the action and drama accelerates with a high-adrenaline group date, during which the ladies have to beat Marc’s time on a skid course in a Toyota Supra.

Only a few of the ladies were handpicked for this group date, however, and from them he will only choose one for a break-way one-on-one date. Who will it be, and will she receive a rose to continue her love journey?

Expect more fast and furious antics in the third episode of The Bachelor SA. The sharks are out – literally and figuratively spoken!

Reasons why you cannot afford to miss all the action:

  • The claws are coming out in one of the three bedrooms occupied by the ladies. What’s happening in the purple room? Will it spiral out of control and influence Marc’s decisions at the rose ceremony?
  • Who’s getting the first kiss?
  • The girls are starting to speak their minds about their competition. Jealousy can be nasty…
  • What’s the status with Silke, Pasha and Mulesa? Even though Silke received the First Impression rose after impressing Marc with a drawing of his beloved rescue dog Luna, they haven’t spent much time together since. After stealing Marisia’s first individual date, Pasha bowled Marc over. And, Marc called Mulesa “one of the most beautiful women he has ever met”!
  • And, will Greta survive another rose ceremony. It was a near miss for the vivacious nail technician at the previous two rose ceremonies.

The power of The Wild Rose’ and other ‘firsts’ on The Bachelor SA

Last night (Thursday, 20 Feb) on the local reality dating series, The Bachelor SA,  consummate host Jason Greer revealed the meaning behind the first twist of the season – The Wild Rose. The mysterious and desirable white rose that was handed to Pasha at the first Rose Ceremony possessed a power that made many of the girls envious – the power to steal any group or individual date off of a fellow lady, valid until the fourth Rose Ceremony.

Much to the ladies surprise, bombshell dancer Pasha wasted no time in putting her Wild Rose to good use – stealing the very first one-on-one date from 24-year-old sweetheart speech therapist Marisia. “I need to do, what I need to do. And, as soon as I heard it was a one-on-one, I knew I had to take it,” Pasha explained in a diary session.  Understandably, Marisia was disappointed, as her opportunity to spend one-on-one time with Marc was taken away from her in the blink of an eye.

Marc, on the other hand, was surprised that Pasha used her Wild Rose so soon but pleased that he got to spend the date with her. The pair spent the day doing the things that our adventurous Bachelor loves, in the great outdoors. The couple enjoyed a wild ride off-roading in a Toyota Hilux, followed by a tranquil hike through Hennops Hiking Trail, which ended with a picturesque sunset to set the tone for the rest of the date. The evening progressed with a dreamy romantic picnic set up in the bush, with lush blankets and cushions, candles and flowers as they watched throwbacks of their youth days on a projector screen and shared funny memories of each.

The couple enjoyed the evening under the moonlight in each other’s arms, and at the end, Marc presented Pasha with a beautiful red rose, making her the first one-on-one rose recipient. Will this place another target on her back?

The drama at the mansion

Seems as if the sparks will fly in the second season of The Bachelor SA. Upon arrival at the beautiful Bachelor mansion,  the ladies had been split up into three different bedrooms – the pink room, the purple room and the red room. The purple room has developed a reputation for being the ‘loud and proud’ room, which has become a tad intimidating for some of the roommates. Bridget and Greta have rubbed each other up the wrong way – prompting Bridget to move into the pink room. Will this move cause more tension and a divide amongst the ladies?

The Group Date

Marc invited Greta, Parushka, Mulesa and Bridget to the first group date which combined two of his passions – his now famous dog Luna and DYI projects. The stylish ladies each had to build a kennel, showcasing their own personality, to impress Marc’s furry friend. At the end of the activity, Marc chose Mulesa to spend some one-on-one time with, where he admitted to her that she is honestly one of the most beautiful women he has ever met.

The Cocktail Party

The girls who didn’t go on dates were burning to get to know Marc a little better. In fact, some of them were like vultures, making their moves with no consideration for the next, leaving the more timid ladies feeling stressed, as another Rose Ceremony loomed. The tension was palpable and mounting. Adding to the tension, was the rumour that the purple room ladies were spitefully aiming to hog all the time with Marc.

The Rose Ceremony

With only eighteen roses and twenty ladies, two ladies left the Bachelor mansion. Greta, Tegan and Xia were left to the very end, with Greta feeling very insecure about receiving the very last rose. At the end of the ceremony, 31-year-old Tegan and 23-year-old Xia found themselves without roses in their hands – bringing their journey to an end. “I don’t enjoy rejection, obviously I wasn’t good enough, and that hurts a little bit,” Tegan admitted in her diary session while Xia said, “not getting a rose, super disappointing. But, if I’m not what he is looking for, I cannot force that connection,”.

Why did Bachelor Marc give Pasha a white rose? All will be revealed in episode two of M-Net’s hit reality show

The very first rose ceremony on the new season of M-Net’s The Bachelor SA provided a mysterious twist. Among the bouquet of red roses to be handed out to the ladies vying for Marc Buckner’s heart was a conspicuous white rose. He then presented it to bombshell dancer Pasha dos Santos (27), without any explanation.

This week, viewers will find out what this rose is called and how it may shift the power in the mansion.

More reasons to watch this exciting episode:

  • It’s all about the firsts. The first individual date, the first group date, and who knows… maybe the first kiss!
  • While it’s still early days, the green-eyed monster is already wreaking havoc in the mansion.
  • Cliques are forming in the house, and one group has a plan to prevent the others from spending time with Marc. Who are the trouble-makers? The girls from the red room, purple room or pink room?
  • During the group date, a fun DIY activity, we see why Marc should never cover his arms.
  • Two ladies will not receive roses at the end of the rose ceremony. Who will it be?

Roses aplenty at the first episode of The Bachelor SA Season 2 – but none for Amor and Michaela!

At the end of the tearful first episode of The Bachelor SA Season 2, there were two roses short for the group of 22 stunning ladies who walked the show’s red carpet to possibly start a love journey with handsome Marc Buckner. So, it’s was time to say goodbye to Blue Bulls Babe Amor Kruger (27) and beautiful Client Liaison Officer Michaela Liebenberg (24), both from Pretoria.

Up for grabs on the evening was the iconic First Impression Rose, eighteen red roses during the rose ceremony and for the first time ever in the local series, a mysterious white rose. But despite making memorable entrances, Amor and Michaela left The Bachelor SA mansion empty-handed.

Michaela walked up to Marc with a bowl of limes which she dropped just as he approached him, asking “would you mind helping me pick them up because I am terrible at pick up limes,” while our Bachelor called Amor “an Egyptian princess”. She entered the show in a stunning body-hugging blue gown, and a Toyota decorated with wedding cans and the words “Future Mrs Buckner”.  Both the ladies managed to grab some time at the cocktail party with Marc, but unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough to receive one of those all-important roses.

“My heart absolutely sank into my shoes, I was extremely disappointed,” Michaela said while a teary-eyed Amor believed that she tried her best and it just wasn’t meant to be.

Marc ended the evening saying that it was much more difficult than he expected and that he can only imagine that it’s going to get much tougher, but that he’s e looking forward to some amazing adventures with the remaining ladies and can’t wait to get to know everyone a lot better.

The First Impression rose

26-year-old vegan activist and boxer Silke Geugis from Cape Town caught Marc’s attention on the red carpet, with a wrapped gift that he could only open at the Cocktail Party, once he found her. Taking matters into her own hands, Silke approached Marc at the Cocktail Party to hand him his gift, but also, to score some extra time with him. She wowed him with a hand drawn portrait of his beloved rescue dog Luna – a big win in Marc’s eyes, who thought the gift was deeply thoughtful. To reciprocate Silke’s efforts, he later awarded her with the First Impression Rose, much to dismay of the twenty one envious ladies.

The White Rose

When the ladies line-up for the show’s very first rose ceremony, one couldn’t help but notice that one rose – and one rose only – stood out from the bunch. Unlike the other red ones, it was white! Marc called up bombshell dancer Pasha (27) first, and handed her this mysterious flower, a first for the local series. “I was excited but then I’m nervous at the same time, because I have no idea what the white rose means,” Pasha said. In the throw-forward at the end of the episode, host Jason Greer told her that it would give her some sort of power. What could this desirable white rose symbolise? And how will it impact Pasha’s relationship with Marc and the ladies?

M-Net’s The Bachelor SA has a “Different Feeling”, courtesy of Daniel Baron

Did you recognise the catchy song to which Marc Buckner is sweeping the ladies of their feet in the second season of The Bachelor SA? It’s indeed “Different Feeling”, created by  popular local muso Daniel Baron.  M-Net and the platinum-selling, award-winning and chart-topping singer, songwriter and producer have joined forces to add a fresh sound to the hit reality show.

Daniel Baron has been part of the MultiChoice family for years. He entered the local music industry in 2006 as one of the finalists of Idols South Africa and on his road to stardom Daniel’s melodic tune “So Much More” was chosen as DStv’s theme song in 2012. To date, the talented musician has been taking the music world by storm with an incredible sixteen radio chart hits and five number-ones to his name. In 2016, People Magazine named him “One of South Africa’s greatest pop stars”.

“M-Net has always supported local talent, and Daniel’s hit from 2010 happened to be exactly what we were looking to give The Bachelor SA Season 2 a distinct texture,” says M-Net’s Head of Publicity, Lani Lombard. “It’s incredible to know that Daniel started his journey on one of our platforms and are immensely proud of all his achievements. “

Daniel has become renowned for being a ‘chameleon of music’, having crossed over genres with an array of electro-infused pop-dance songs, inspiring stadium-sized rock anthems and emotional piano ballads that have all taken the world by storm. When Daniel wrote “Different Feeling” he drew the inspiration of the song from meeting someone new and feeling something that you have never felt before. The song, amongst many of his other hits, has been specially crafted to convey messages of love, inspiration, hope and faith.

And, how does he feel being part of The Bachelor SA? “As a singer-songwriter and producer, to have my song selected as the theme song of a hit local reality series of this magnitude, is something I only dreamt about,” Daniel Baron said. “It’s a great honour and I hope that my song will add to the message of the show; that in a really short space of time, you can meet the love of your life,” Daniel says.

“DifferentFeeling” will be re-released as a special edition remixed version and an acoustic version on Friday, 28th February 2020 – in celebration of The Bachelor SA, but also to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the hit single.

Daniel has also recently released his latest single titled Cannibal, which is the first single taken from his soon-to-be-released fourth studio album. He is also hard at work producing multiple song projects for numerous upcoming artists.

22 + 2 reasons to watch The Bachelor SA this week!

What’s the best way to get in the mood for Valentine’s Day 2020? A great option is to observe Cupid in action the night before (Thursday, 13 February, of course) in the very first episode of M-Net’s sensational second season of The Bachelor SA. At 19:00 Prince Handsome Marc Buckner will meet the 22 lovely ladies who are ready to potentially become the love of his life.

These stunning women are all strong, independent and accomplished individuals who deserve Marc’s heart – and a date with all romantic souls and reality show fans. Two more reasons to watch The Bachelor SA are the two thorns among the roses: 2020’s catch of the year and his compassionate best man, show host Jason Greer.

Season 2’s 22 Bachelorettes are (in alphabetical order):

  • As her name suggests, 26-year-old Amor Kruger from Pretoria is a true romantic, loyal, kind and soft-hearted soul. Born and bred in Pretoria, Amor holds an LLB degree from Unisa, but her first love has always been dancing. She donned her first pair of ballet shoes when she was six-years-old, and later landed a gig as a Blue Bulls Babe.
  • Radiant redhead Andeline Wieland (24) is a farm girl from Namibia with Afrikaans and German ancestry. She was crowned Miss Teen Namibia in 2012 and was the first princess at the Miss Namibia 2016 pageant. Thereafter, she nabbed the prestigious Miss Continents 2017 title. Andeline is studying towards her third qualification at the University of Stellenbosch, which follows a Bachelor’s degree in Drama and a postgrad in Journalism.
  • 31-year-old Bridget Marshall now lives in Sea Point, Cape Town, but is originally from Durban – just like Marc. Bridget is a big-hearted soul with a big personality, big smile and big dreams. To light up any room is her superpower. She works as a lifestyle manager for a concierge company in Cape Town.
  • Melkbosstrand’s Daniella Thibault (25) has a mega-watt smile and an enviable positive outlook on life. In her first year studying, she juggled three jobs and is now a successful self-made businesswoman, running her online marketing and e-commerce venture.
  • Gillian Seetso (26) grew up with her mother in Roodepoort as part of a wonderful extended family and was schooled in Afrikaans, which she, of course, speaks fluently. Whether it’s in seTswana, Afrikaans or English, this effervescent receptionist loves talking and has an exceptional ability to diffuse difficult situations.
  • Open-minded, free-spirited party girl Greta Sher (27) from Broadacres, Johannesburg, was born in Lithuania and her family is of mixed European heritage. She has been in SA since she was 12-years-old and works as a nail technician. To keep fit, she most definitely does not do running or cycling. She prefers twerking!.
  • Jessica Calder (27) is a calm, caring and gentle patisserie chef and bakery owner who makes her own bespoke and decadent cakes and cookies in Constantia, Cape Town. When Jessica C is not busy conjuring up these to-die-for delights in the kitchen, she is working out in the gym, taking part in challenging obstacle races or simply enjoying time with her friends and family, usually with a glass of chardonnay in hand.
  • There’s another Jessica on the show. Her surname is Ross and she will be called Jessica R (28) on the show. She’s an angel-faced fashion designer from Cape Town who has her own bodywear brand, Active Spirit. In 2014, she was one of four AFI Joburg Fashion Week winners.
  • Level-headed girl-next-door Marisia van Wyk (24) from Klerksdorp is a speech therapist and audiologist whose job has taught her to adapt to different life situations. She is fluent in five languages, including sign language and French. She also plays the piano.
  • Pretoria’s Michaela Liebenberg (24) is a career woman who is super passionate about her work and wants to be a role model who empowers women. Engagement Rings

Heirlooms & Inheritance – What is the Fair Way to Divide your Estate?

Heirlooms & Inheritance. This is an important question that one should consider when thinking about your future. This may seem an odd thing to include but, as it can have huge consequences financially to your and emotionally for your family, it is important to have a clear plan for your heirlooms. Families have been ripped apart over jewellery that has been left to them by their parents or grandparents.

With 80 years’ experience in the jewellery industry and having seen 5 generations of families come and go, Jack Friedman Jewellers has obtained unique insights and advice on how to manage this vexing issue.

Jewellery is an incredibly emotional and valuable part of a loved one’s legacy; and when they pass away there is very little that we can hold on to that has much meaning as a piece of their jewellery.

Of all the items that that person leaves behind, jewellery is without a doubt the closest and most personal reminder of that person and the life they lived while wearing the piece. For a woman, a diamond engagement ring would have been worn every day from marriage till death, while for a man it may be his wedding band, pocket watch or cufflinks worn on his wedding day.

Heirloom jewellery pieces are generally selected by or for someone very important to them. These engagement rings, wedding rings, pocket watches, cufflinks or bracelets are worn close to the skin, as a memory and celebration of the life they lived. Heirlooms are more than just a piece of jewellery, it is a constant reminder of happy memories you created with them, the spiritual connection to the loved one and a way of holding them close to your heart.

It is safe to say, that the possible heirs should not be left to make the decision of what is done with the jewellery or dividing the jewellery between themselves. No matter how loving and wonderful the relationship is between them, this decision will surely lead to conflict between the heirs. One other mistake that you shouldn’t make, however good the intention, is to secretly distribute your jewellery to your heirs. The result will cause division and animosity between the heirs.

As unique as each piece of jewellery, are your relationships with friends and family. Jewellery is personal and one should look at distributing your heirlooms based on your relationships and connections with each family member; eg: A specific necklace was “gifted when you were born and always reminds me of you” should be left to that child. Therefore, one should have your jewellery collection catalogued and decide in a letter of wishes as to who will receive which item, and what makes it even more special is the reason why you would want that person to have that specific piece.

Bear in mind, if the jewellery is specifically listed in your Last Will and Testimony, there is a good chance that this will attract Estate Duty, fortunately jewellery is a personal possession and does not attract Capital Gains Tax.

For as long as jewellery has been handed-down, there has been an age-old conflict as to how to deal with the important jewellery between their sons and daughters. The value that gets allocated tin the pieces that are left to each family member, should be equal. Consideration must also be made for if the jewellery will be sold and the revenue distributed or if it will be kept as a family heirloom.

There is one exception, in Jack Friedman’s view, as to when jewellery should not be considered in terms of value.

How do you correctly divide your jewellery and inheritance amongst your family?

If your wish is that an item of jewellery remains a family heirloom and not be sold for value, then it would be very unfair for the beneficiary of that piece of jewellery to only receive the item, while other family member(s) receive cash amounts to the value of or higher than the value of the piece of jewellery.

For  example: Heirlooms & Inheritance – there is an engagement ring worth R50 000 and R100 000 cash has been left to two siblings. There are two options available to equally share the value of the jewellery depending of if the jewellery is to be sold or passed down:

  • Option 1– Ring May be sold
  • Sibling 1 – R50 000 ring + R25 000 cash  – Total inheritance R75 000
  • Sibling 2 – R75 000 cash – Total inheritance R75 000
  • Option 2 – Ring MAY NOT be sold as it becomes an heirloom
  • Sibling  1 – Ring (Non-value) + R50 000 cash   – Total inheritance R50 000
  • Sibling 2 – R50 000 cash – Total Inheritance R50 000

The example is clear, there must be an equal split of value between the siblings. If the item is intended to be an heirloom (to pass on to their daughter who will pass on to their daughter and remain a legacy for you), the piece becomes a non-value as the value cannot be used by the sibling.

Therefore they need to receive an equal split of the money. However, if the sibling is able to sell the piece, the value of the ring must be taken into consideration when splitting of the money, so that the total value received by both siblings is equal. Heirlooms & Inheritance:

Incorrect splitting of inheritance

  • Option 1 – Ring May Be Sold
  • Sibling 1 – R50 000 ring + R50 000 cash – Total inheritance R100 000
  • Sibling 2 – R50 000 cash – Total inheritance R50 000

Option 2 – Ring MAY NOT be sold as it becomes an heirloom

  • Sibling 1 – Ring (Non-Value) + R25 000 cash – Total inheritance R25 000
  • Sibling 2 – R75 000 cash – Total inheritance R75 000

So, what value should you place on jewellery in an estate?

Taking away the sentimental value that you place on a piece of jewellery, there are a number of real ways to measure or determine the value of the engagement ring, wedding ring, pocket watch, cufflinks or any other pieces you’d like to pass down as an heirloom. These are:

1 – Insurance Replacement Value: This is the amount that your insurer would cover if the item was lost or stolen, which is approximately 20 to 25% more than the price that was paid for it.

2 – Retail Value: This is what you would pay for that item today in a store.

3 – Second-Hand or Resell Value: This is a reasonable value that one could expect to sell the item for on auction taking into account: fees, commissions and VAT on this transaction.

4 – Break-up Value: This is the value of the components of the piece. For example with a diamond engagement ring: it is the value of the diamonds and how much they could sell for plus the value of the gold based on the dollar listed gold price of the day. Of the options, this is by far the lowest value that an item could be.

Which of these values should one use in your evaluation of your jewellery?

With our 80-years’ experience in manufacturing and selling of fine jewellery, we recommend using Option 3, as the best way to find out the value of the piece of jewellery. This will then give you a good idea on how to distribute the remaining possessions equally.

However, if the jewellery is falling within the State and will have State Duty Consequences, then it is recommended that you use Option 4. The lower value, which is acceptable to laws and tax authorities, will ensure that best gross value on the piece.

What if you’d rather your jewellery and divide the proceeds accordingly?

This is another option available to you. Jack Friedman can offer advice and services if this is the route you’d like to pursue. For example; you have an engagement ring with one large diamond and three children. It is not recommended to recut the large diamond into 3 smaller diamonds due to the loss in value. The solution? Exchanged the one large diamond for 3 smaller diamonds.

You may have a few questions around the value of your pieces or the best ways to divide your pieces. We’d be happy to answer them for you.
