Traditionally round cut diamonds still exert timeless appeal.

The Kay Engagement Ring

The Kay diamond engagement ring is named after Jack Friedman’s wife Kay who encouraged and supported his dreams. Their grandson, Howard, celebrates their love in the design of this exquisite solitaire engagement ring. The Kay diamond engagement ring that is manufactured in South Africa is without a doubt one of the finest solitaires in the world. The band of the ring tapers towards the Centre Diamond and this puts emphasis on the Centre Diamond. There is no basket, so this allows light to enter and brings out the sparkle and colours in the Centre Diamond. The setting is versatile and allows between 0.25ct – 2ct center diamond.

La Mer Engagement Ring

Who could tire of the 3 stone La Mer that is a gorgeously sensual design inspired by the waves of the ocean. The seamless u-shaped claw design allows the flow of light to travel through the diamonds and is symbolic of how your love has no beginning or end. The trio of diamonds also represents the past, present and future. The special design of claws in the La Mer engagement ring provides an open setting and this allows for the light to shine through the diamond from all angles and creates beautiful sparkles and colours. This open setting also allows for the Centre Diamond be viewed from all sides.

Round Halo Engagement Ring

A center diamond looks enormous in a halo engagement ring setting. And a quarter-, third- or half-carat diamond can look, by some estimates, as much as a half a carat larger. The diamonds surrounding the ring attract the light, forming a glittering halo, drawing attention to the brilliance of the centre diamond and this creates rainbow colours to sparkle in your diamond. Jack Friedman has a wide variety of different halo engagement ring styles if the classic halo engagement ring isn’t quite “it” for you.

Jack Friedman’s Guide to Diamond Shaped Engagement Rings

Thinking about buying a loose diamond or a diamond shape engagement rings? It is recommended to always follow the 5 Cs (Cut, Clarity, Colour, Carat, and Country of Origin) and make sure the diamond is GIA or EGL South African certified, however, what comes before the 5 Cs you may ask? Deciding on the diamond shape. Whether you prefer a traditional round shape diamond or want to change it up with a pear-shaped diamond, Jack Friedman has everything you need to know when shopping for different diamond shapes for the ideal engagement rings.

Pear-Shaped Diamonds

Pear-shaped diamond engagement rings are unique and timeless and have a high brilliance making them known for their sparkle. Pear diamond shaped engagement rings have a unique “bow-tie” effect in the centre and hold more colour than alternatively shaped diamonds. Therefore, the pear-shaped diamond is the perfect option if you want a fancy coloured diamond engagement ring. We advise that the setting of a pear-shaped diamond engagement ring has a v-shaped claw holding the point of the diamond to protect it and has perfect symmetry so that if you draw a line down the middle of the diamond each half should be identical. The elongated shape of pear cut diamonds makes your ring finger look longer and thinner, as well as having a larger surface area so the diamond looks bigger and can cost 10%-30% less than a round diamond.

Heart-Shaped Diamonds

Heart-shaped diamond engagement rings are a symbol of love and romance. This diamond is not as common, which is great if you are looking for a rare and distinctive choice for an engagement ring. If a heart-shaped diamond is too small, it can lose the heart shape and look more like a pear-shaped diamond. Jack Friedman advise 1 carat or bigger, so the heart shape is more noticeable, and the length to width ratio of the heart shape to be the same. The heart shaped diamond is a modified version of a round-shaped diamond and can be more cost-effective as it is usually less expensive than a round cut diamond of similar carat, colour, cut and clarity.

Princess-Shaped Diamonds

The princess-shaped diamond engagement ring is contemporary, sophisticated, and known for its popular square shape. Due to the popular nature of the princess cut diamond engagement ring, it can be more valuable than other fancy shape diamonds. When cutting the diamond less of the rough diamond is lost, making it more cost-effective and reducing waste. The sharp corners of the princess shaped diamond can easily chip if it is not set correctly. We recommend a tube or a 4 V-shaped claw setting for an engagement ring. The striking look of the princess cut diamond is the perfect choice for a modern stylish woman.

Cushion-Shaped Diamonds

Cushion-shaped diamond engagement rings combine the square shape of princess-cut diamonds with the rounded edges of round-shape diamonds. Princess-shaped diamonds can sometimes appear bulky when set in a 4 claw engagement ring, therefore if you prefer a sleeker look but want something just as sophisticated Jack Friedman recommends the cushion-shaped diamond. Cushion-shaped diamonds have a high level of sparkle and the rounded edges to make it more durable. Cushion-shaped diamonds are also less expensive than round-shaped diamonds. This is the perfect choice if you want to combine the classic feel with a modern touch in an engagement ring.

Oval-Shaped Diamonds

The oval-shaped diamond engagement rings are elegant with its unique flair. It is the perfect choice for someone with an active lifestyle as it does not have pointed edges. We advise when choosing an oval-shaped diamond engagement ring to make sure there is a minimal bowtie effect, a dark shadow across the middle of the diamond. This usually occurs in a poorly cut diamond and will reduce the value of the diamond. The elongated shape of the oval diamond makes it appear larger than a round diamond for the same carat weight. The ratio between the length and width of the oval is very important and you do not want the oval to be too long and thin or too short and fat, the ideal ratio of length to width is 1.4 to 1.6. Oval-shaped diamonds have the classic appeal of round-shaped diamonds but are perfect if you are looking for something more unique.

Round-Shaped Diamonds

The round-shaped diamond engagement rings is the most classic, timeless, and popular of all the diamond shapes. Round cut diamonds are the most valuable and the best investment. We recommend choosing a diamond with the best clarity you can afford, and the cut, proportions and finish should be Very Good to Excellent. Round diamonds are elegant and can go well with all settings of engagement rings. Round brilliant diamonds have the greatest sparkle of all the diamond shapes, as they are cut to have 58 facets, which allow light to enter the diamond and reflect off each facet, creating a striking sparkle. We advise white gold or platinum claws as it makes the diamond appear larger even if the rest of the setting is yellow or rose gold. A round diamond with a halo is a great way to make the diamond appear bigger at a better cost.

Would You Buy a Lab Grown Diamond For Your Engagement Rings?

Before we answer this question would you buy a lab grown diamond for your engagement rings there are a few things to consider.

What’s the difference?

Lab-grown diamonds look identical to Natural diamonds with the human eye and have the same chemical properties. They both come in similar shapes, sizes and sparkle. Cubic Zirconia is not the same as lab-grown diamonds, this diamond look-a-like is softer and does not have the same chemical properties as a natural diamond. Cubics are more likely to scratch and lose sparkle over time.

Even though a Lab-grown diamond engagement rings will look identical to Natural Diamonds, there are differences when it comes to value, cost, sustainability and rarity.

Lab-grown diamonds have no investment value, and while diamond jewellery should not be purchased primarily as an investment, diamonds do appreciate in value over time and hold their value. A lab-grown diamond has no value immediately after purchase, and therefore it is not part of the Jack Friedman philosophy.

Lab Diamonds are made by man and there is no limit on the amount that can be made. Natural diamonds, however, take a long time to form in nature and there is a limited number that can be mined. Choosing a natural diamond in your engagement rings gives you the option to upgrade on an anniversary or sell the diamond if the engagement doesn’t work out. Once you buy a Lab-grown diamond, it has zero trade-in value.

Lab-grown diamonds cost up to 30-50% less than Natural diamonds for the same size, cut, clarity and colour. However, due to Lab diamonds having no re-sale value, we advise choosing another stone that fits your budget like a white sapphire or morganite gemstone.

See our blog on Diamond Alternatives for the Non-Traditional Bride for more non-diamond engagement ring ideas

When it comes to sustainability Lab-grown diamonds have been said to be more sustainable as they do not affect the Earth. However, the chemicals and gases used, as well as the electricity used to power the machinery needed to create Lab-grown diamonds have been found to have a negative environmental impact. Ethically and environmentally mined diamonds do amazing good for the communities around the mines and the supply chain. It is important to take into consideration the 5th C when buying a diamond for your engagement ring; Country of Origin to ensure sustainability.

The 5th C- Country of Origin

It is very important to know where your diamond comes from and to make sure your diamond is conflict-free and sourced ethically. At Jack Friedman, we only source diamonds from South Africa and only buy diamonds from reputable mines. We also ensure a certified chain from mine to market, so we can locate exactly where the diamond has originated from, the time it is mined to the time it is placed in your engagement ring. We also guarantee an internationally recognized certificate of origin with all our diamonds as well as having the certificate number inscribed into our diamonds ensuring their origin. We at Jack Friedman strive to give our clients the best quality jewellery, ensure that every #JackFriedmanMoment is backed up by the highest standards and endures.

Freshwater vs Seawater Pearls

Pearls which possess a uniquely delicate translucence and luster place them among the most highly valued gemstones. Pearls are the birthstone of June, the perfect gift for any occasion and provide an elegant touch to any outfit.

Natural Pearls

Natural Pearls caused by a grain of sand are extremely rare. Throughout history, these pearls were worn by royalty and in Roman times were believed to be more valuable than diamonds. Today natural pearls are highly expensive and are almost impossible to find. Currently, all pearls sold commercially are either cultured in seawater or freshwater, so what’s the difference?

Saltwater Pearls

Mr K Mikimoto revolutionised the pearl industry when he took a tiny bead and planted it into the oyster shell. The oyster layers its luster around the bead-like tiny fish scales which creates a pearl’s shine and colour. Rub a pearl against your teeth, if it feels slightly coarse you know the pearl is genuine. The oysters themselves are not cultivated and are left to grow the pearl naturally, making seawater pearls pricier than freshwater pearls.

Freshwater Pearls

Fresh water pearls are cultivated in lakes or rivers and are becoming more and more popular. The muscles used are re-usable and can produce many pearls, and they can culture freshwater pearls in all different shapes and sizes. It is now possible to get freshwater pearls up to 10mm in size as well as various colours. Cultured freshwater pearls can be dyed yellow, green, blue, brown, pink, purple or black. Black pearls are mostly cultured because they are so rare in nature. In fact, black pearls aren’t actually black but rather a combination of green, purple, blue or silver.

South Sea Island Pearls

South Sea pearls are special extra-large pearls that can only be cultured in the wild. The oyster used can live up to 5 years and weigh 5kg with a 30cm diameter. They are suspended in wire baskets for at least 3 years. Tahitian South Sea Island pearls are cultured in French Polynesia and produce black, grey/green and various magnificent colours. The White South Sea Island Pearls with silver, rose and gold hues are found off the Australian Coast in the South China Sea’s and are 5 times rarer and more valuable.

Expert Tips

We advise keeping your pearls away from perfume and hairspray, and wiping with distilled water using a soft cloth to maintain their natural luster. Pearls must be strung with knots between to protect the pearls from rubbing against each other. Pearls should ideally be restrung once a year as the string can become discoloured.

THE BACHELOR SA ENDS WITH A UNIQUE LOCKDOWN FINALE ON M-NET THIS WEEK THURSDAY

Since last week’s eventful final dates, filmed at Kapama Game Resort, fans of The Bachelor SA have been waiting with bated breath to see how the final episode plays out. Who will Bachelor Marc choose at the end of this dramatic season? Shy speech therapist Marisia or extrovert Bridget, who gradually worked her way into the hearts of Marc and viewers alike? Will Marc go down on a bended knee to propose? What will the ring look like? Will there be a fairy-tale ending? And, what’s happening with this season’s  “Women Tell All” and “After The Final Rose” get-togethers during lockdown?

M-Net is finally lifting the lid, but only on some of these pressing questions, of course. By the time South Africa’s lockdown had commenced, the entire season was already in the can. Howard Friedman from the legendary Jack Friedman Jewellers, established in 1933, arrived at Kapamaon Marc’s request and the final events unfolded against the most spectacular African sunset. The only outstanding item for the final broadcast on Thursday 28 May was the live-to-tape studio recording during which the ladies reunite to speak their minds.

“To keep our cast and crew safe and adhere to lockdown restrictions around travel and social gatherings, we had to turn to technology to bring back the ladies and ensure a fitting finale to a riveting season,” says M-Net’s Head of Publicity, Lani Lombard.

The result? A special, world-first, 60-minute lockdown episode that will integrate the last day at Kapama with Zoom calls during which some of the ladies share their thoughts about life in the mansion, Marc and the love journeys of Bridget and Marisia. At the end of the episode, viewers will also see what happened “after the final rose”.

But that’s not where the action stops. After the end credits roll, fans will be invited to the unique, quirky The Bachelor SA Pyjama Afterparty on the M-Net website. This is where the ladies will get the opportunity to grill Marc about his decisions and their departures, and clear the air around some of the drama in the mansion. There will be Zoom group calls, as well as individual video sessions from the ladies’ homes.  We will also find out how lockdown has been treating them, and if they have perhaps found another love interest after leaving the show.

Here’s a list of some of the clips to feature during The Bachelor SA Pyjama Afterparty, taking place on Thursday, 28 May.

  • The ladies talk about their relationships in the mansion.
  • Qiniso, Daniella, Silke, and Stefanie share some behind-the-scenes moments not seen on screen.
  • Marc answers questions from Gillian, Rikki, Pasha, Jess C, Andeline, and Silke
  • Jason and Marc get real as they reflect on the season and find out whether Marc would change anything.
  • The ladies play the LottoStar ‘Most Likely To’ game one more time, now that they’ve watched the season.
  • Xia, Greta, Pi, Tamryn, Michaela, Mulesa, Parushka share where they are now, and reflect on their experiences from this season.
  • The ladies and Marc respond to some spicy viewer tweets.

The Bachelor SA Season 2 is screened every Thursday at 19:00 on M-Net Channel 101. Jess.R leaves The Bachelor SA heartbroken The Top 2 meet Marc’s parents

From the very first night Marc met her on the red carpet, he fell in love with her eyes and wanted to know more about the beauty in the princess gown. She waited a long time for a date with her prince charming – but he saved the best for last – inviting her to the very first getaway date in Namibia and gifting her with the very first piece of custom made Jack Friedman jewellery. In episodes that followed, she evidently became the leading lady vying for Marc’s heart and a huge threat to the other ladies in the mansion. But, last night (Thursday, 21 May) in a shock exit, Jessica Ross was sent home without a rose or much of an explanation during the penultimate episode of The Bachelor SA.

The 28-year-old fashion designer had her dreams of a potential life with Marc shattered in a matter of minutes as he tried to explain the reasons behind his decision – many of which she didn’t understand. Jess grappled with his explanations and the outcome was a difficult reality for her to digest. She would hear nothing of it, saying to him that there were no signs or red flags on their last date, or even in the past two months that they had been together. In tears, she questioned how he could do this to her after everything and if any of it was even real. He apologised for hurting her and she responded with “it’s fine, I’m just gonna go. There’s nothing else you can say,”.

This means that the top two ladies vying for Marc’s heart and that beautiful Jack Friedman ring is 31-year-old Bridget Marshall, a travel agent from Durban and 24-year-old Marisia van Wyk, a speech therapist from Krugersdorp.

A recap of the episode:

The tables were turned this week as the top two ladies met the two most important people in Marc’s life, before embarking on their final romantic dates where the exciting option of using the fantasy suites was on the cards. Marc’s parents, Marcel and Jenny, were pleased with both of the ladies and were proud of Marc. Marc’s dad wanted him to establish where the ladies’ heads were at and what they wanted, as a relationship is a two-way street. Marc’s mom shared that she believes that a great relationship starts off as a friendship, but that she is concerned about age – as Marc is very mature for his 37-years.

Once the awkward family visits were over, Marisia and Bridget prepared for their final dates and ultimately their final opportunity to solidify their relationships and convince Marc why each of them should be the one.

Marisia was taken on a romantic bush walk, where they could just enjoy each other and talk. The walk was followed by a little picnic in the bush and finally a super-romantic bubble jacuzzi bath with champagne and rose petals. They cleared up things about their relationship, talked about vulnerability, their fears and their intentions. After their activities, the couple made their way to a secluded romantic dinner. When the invitation to the fantasy suite arrived, Marc was hesitant and explained to Marisia that he feels guilty – because he is dating two women – and he doesn’t think it would be fair. This left Marisia feeling confused and questioning his feelings about her, but she respected his decision.

Bridget’s date was next, and she was whisked off to a secluded outdoor setting in a helicopter, where the couple spent the afternoon laughing and just enjoying each other’s company – which Marc enjoyed – as he kept affirming that this is exactly how he sees his life in the future. Their picnic was followed by a romantic dinner, where their fun banter continued. This time around, Bridget managed to convince Marc to accept the fantasy suite invitation, as she would really like extra time with him. He agreed to have one drink, so they could spend more time, and left.

At this stage, it could be anyone’s guess whom Marc has fallen head over heels for. But, from the dates, it’s evident that both ladies are in it for the long haul. Tune in next week for the season finale to see how the love story ends!

Buying an Engagement ring can be daunting, follow our Dos and Don’ts of Buying an Engagement Ring to find the perfect ring your partner will love!

Do spend at least 2 to 3 months of your salary on the engagement ring.  This is one of the most important decisions of your life and the budget should reflect this. The choice of the right life partner will mean a lifetime of happiness, therefore what better place to spend on the right choice.

Don’t overspend on your budget the next stage of your life will be very costly, with weddings, honeymoons and new homes. Set a budget and stick to it.

Do ensure that if you do not know the exact finger size, we advise that you rather make the ring one size bigger. You don’t want your partner to feel embarrassed when the engagement ring doesn’t fit. Don’t worry if it’s slightly too big, Jack Friedman offers free re-sizing on all our engagement rings.

Don’t buy a diamond without a GIA (Gemological Institute of America certificate) or an EGL (European Gemological certificate), this certificate displays the independently graded specifics of the diamond such as clarity and any inclusion not seen to the human eye that may devalue the diamond. This will also guarantee the value of the diamond.

Do shop for a diamond using the 4 C’s: carat, cut, clarity and colour. See our previous blog on the importance of choosing a diamond according to the 4 Cs. Link here

Don’t buy a diamond that appears to be too cheap. There is always a reason why a diamond would have a very low price, there is usually something wrong with the diamond that a non-diamond expert would not be able to see.

Do pay attention to your partner’s current jewellery preferences, for example, if all their existing jewellery is white metal then white gold or platinum would be the right choice. If most of their jewellery is gold then yellow gold or rose gold is best.

Do your research. This is a special purchase that you will have for the rest of your life, make sure you shop around to make sure you are getting the best price for the best ring. Marc hands out the final three roses – and Gillian leaves empty-handed!

After visiting their homes and meeting their loved ones, South Africa’s most eligible single guy, dreamboat Marc Buckner has chosen the three ladies whom he will take to the next significant phase of his love journey on M-Net’s hit reality dating show, The Bachelor SA. But first, he had to say goodbye to someone who has made warm and fuzzy footprints in the hearts of many viewers – bubbly and adventurous Gillian-with-a-G.

That means that Bridget, Jess.R and Marisia will spend some quality time with Marc at the extravagant five-star game lodge Kapama, before he makes his final decision on Thursday, 28 May during the series’ much-awaited final Rose Ceremony. In the next couple of episodes, the three ladies will go on adventure dates and have the option of visiting the Fantasy Suites with Marc.

Although Gillian left the Bachelor mansion with a smile after last night’s Rose Ceremony, she had nothing to say to Marc. But her parting words to viewers were telling: “It’s the end of the journey. The only thing that I really wish was that he didn’t put me in the top four,” What can I do? I cannot force a connection, but he’s following his heart, he’s following his gut. I couldn’t even say anything to him,”.

Gillian and Marc had an easy-going relationship and he especially appreciated how open and honest she was. Their relationship went to the next level when Marc invited Gillian to a special one-on-one date next to a lake, where she let down her walls and showed Marc a completely different side to her, sharing her beautiful upbringing and getting intimate with Marc. Although Marc was the very first man to be introduced to Gillian’s mom and friends, their connection just fizzled out and wasn’t enough for him to take things to the next level. In his discussion with Jason before the Rose Ceremony, he noted that since the chemistry date, he and Gillian had this crazy attraction followed by affection and kissing, but with the home visit, it all subsided.

A breakdown of the hometown dates:

  • Bridget in Durban (Marc and Bridget’s hometown)

The date: Bridget took Marc on an old-school-high-school date at the arcade. The couple spent the afternoon bowling and playing arcade games, which was filled with loads of laughter and flirting. Marc and Bridget have formed a great friendship as a basis of their relationship, and share great banter. While she is giddy and excited by the prospect of a life with Marc, she does still have her reservations. Bridget is afraid that he still sees her as a friend, and will friend-zone her like many of her past relationships. At the end of the date, Marc admitted that he is enjoying her more and more and that his attraction to her is increasing as he gets to learn more about her, while Bridget couldn’t stop wiping the smile off her face and saying that she has completely fallen for him.

Meeting the family: Marc met Bridget’s mom and dad, and her aunt and uncle. He immediately felt comfortable and welcomed, and her Uncle thought that they looked great together as a couple. The visit went very well and Marc felt relaxed and right at home. While Bridget’s dad was apprehensive, he said that they were well suited and her mom was impressed, saying that he is a decent chap.

Marc’s round-up with Jason: Loved the date, loved her warm and welcoming family and believes that their relationship has moved from friendship to something more romantic.

  • Jess.R in Cape Town (Marc and Jess.R’s current hometown)

The date: Jess.R recreated a date that she has dreamt about since she was a little girl – a picnic at Spier with no distractions – where they could chat and unpack more about their relationship. During the date, it was evident that their relationship feels natural and easy-going or as Marc refers to it, like “high-school sweethearts”. Marc noted after the date that she kisses very well and that they just enjoy their time together!

Meeting the family: Jess.R had Marc meet her parents and her best friend Melissa. Jess.R felt weird about introducing Marc to her family because she wasn’t in a committed relationship yet. Her best friend Melissa took the honours of finding out Marc’s intentions with Jess and warned him to be careful with her heart. While her family was pleased to see her happy and in love, they were concerned about her getting hurt.

Marc’s round-up with Jason: Loved her dad, but felt like he needed to be saved from Jess.R’s mom, as he wasn’t sure if she liked him. For him, family is important and he needs to know if he can get along with someone’s family.

  • Gillian-with-a-G in Johannesburg

The date: Gillian invited Marc to enter Gilly’s world, where she would reveal another side to her – her love for photography. She believes that Marc should learn things about her in stages, to keep things fresh and exciting, which Marc quite enjoys. The pair spent the afternoon doing a photoshoot, while also chatting and getting to know each other better.

Meeting the family: Gillian was extremely nervous about introducing Marc to her mom and best friends because she has never brought anyone home to meet them. She felt like her mom was accepting but still tried her best to make everyone comfortable and not awkward. Gillian’s mom was curious as to why Marc chose her, while her friends wanted to know what made Gillian different from his other suitors. For Gillian, her mothers’ opinion was the only one that counted – and she was pleased that her mom was happy and believed that he had a good heart. Marc noted that their relationship was evolving slowly, but was surprised to learn about her social media life for the very first time.

Marc’s round-up with Jason: Their crazy attraction subsided after the hometown date, and he felt thrown with her social media life that he didn’t know about.

  • Marisia in Johannesburg

The date: Marisia chose an adventurous activity for her date, which was right up Marc’s alley. She chose to do rock-climbing, which Marc thought was extremely smart, as they had the opportunity to get to know each other better, work together and build their relationship. He also noted that she looked “so sexy” in her little leopard shorts. He noted that she is very like-minded in many ways and that they both enjoy similar things. Marisia found his adventurous side very attractive and also thought that he looked sexy.

Meeting the family: Marisia was initially nervous to introduce Marc to her Afrikaans family. Before they arrived, she tipped him off to greet everyone with a kiss, as per Afrikaans tradition. She also mentioned to him how important family is to her. She introduced Marc to her parents and her two best friends, and to Marc’s surprise, the visit was extremely jovial with no awkward moments. Overall, her parents were content and liked Marc with her dad calling them “very well-matched”.

Marc’s round-up with Jason: He was very excited about the date and appreciated her family for being so accommodating by speaking English. He especially loved seeing Marisia come out of her shell, but is concerned about her emotional maturity.
